Topic: Equipment Hire

Does anybody know of a local dealer who hires out lenses for a week or weekend?

Or if some could recommend someone that does so by post?

Steve - Sorry, I don't know of anybody that hires lenses locally.  The only dealers around are Jessops, Walters and Swansea Camera Centre.  Your best shot would probably be Walters.  There are normally firms advertising in Practical Photography or Amateur Photographer.  There is one called Lensesforhire.co.uk could be worth a shot.

I have looked at Lensesforhire.co.uk they seem to offer the best service for my requirments, I think I may give them a go and also make enquires at Walters.

Walters do hire out equipment. There is no list what is available you just phone up and ask.

Hiring a lens for a 'one off' photoshoot or to 'try before you buy' seems a good idea but don't forget to read the small print. If the lens is damaged or lost you are liable for the cost of replacing the lens - so insurance in my view is essential.

I've taken a quick look at http://www.lensesforhire.co.uk/index.asp and as you say seem to offer a good service. Don't forget to add postage and cost of insurance to the hire charge - insurance excess is £150 so not unreasonable on a hight cost lens.

When we asked Walters about their charges, my recollection is that a significant deposit is required - but it would be worth asking about charges and save the cost of postage which is not insignificant particularly for larger lenses.

When I ask  Walters for the cost of hiring a lens they said the deposit was the value of the lens, so a
EF300mm f/2.8L USM, would need a deposit of around £3800 unless you had an insurance to cover the lens

There was an advert on the board at the back of the club (unless it has now been removed) - the business is run by the son of the Mumbles Comp Sec.  I have no idea of prices or availability.

Just to note that all of the ones above require a high deposit to hire out the equipment, where as LFH don't require any.
Camerent has a lot of kit more than the others.
